Apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) Test Overview

Apo-A1 is the major protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), often called “good cholesterol.”

It plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport, carrying cholesterol from tissues back to the liver for excretion.

Clinical uses include:

Assessing cardiovascular risk (low Apo-A1 is linked to higher risk of heart disease).

Monitoring patients with dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, or coronary artery disease.

Evaluating liver function, since Apo-A1 is synthesized in the liver.

Supporting diagnosis of Tangier disease and other rare lipid disorders.

The test is performed using a blood sample.

Analyte: Apolipoprotein A1 concentration in serum.

Normal Range (approximate, varies by lab):

Men: 110 – 180 mg/dL

Women: 120 – 200 mg/dL

Abnormal Findings:

Low Apo-A1: Associated with increased cardiovascular risk, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, or genetic lipid disorders.

High Apo-A1: May reflect reduced cardiovascular risk or response to lipid-lowering therapy.

Clinical Use:

Provides a sensitive marker of HDL function.

Helps refine cardiovascular risk assessment beyond standard cholesterol tests.

Supports monitoring in patients with metabolic and hepatic conditions.
